The Dread Knights

Many could die on the fields of battle, whether they are the warriors, the reapers or the innocents. All of these souls then become lost to the world, transcending to the other Realms where they should finally rest in peace. Almost all of them, that is.

Talented souls, or soul gifted with great powers, are able to manifest after death, coming back to the human realm to continue as living beings with greater power. As mere humans, they were restricted by soft flesh and brittle bones. Their bodies were prone to illnesses and weaknesses. Having died and lost all that they once were, they come back from the dead, using their original bodies as the base of their new souls to perform what normal humans regard as miracles – or more accurately, disasters.

It is rare for a person to die and relive without a powerful force pushing them beyond the boundaries of the human body and mind. Hatred, anger and despair are absolute and it eats away the conscience of the soul, leaving behind only raw power and the strength to release any restraints. Should a person die with sheer emotions filling him beyond the point of bursting, the world may prepare to meet a certain end.

Frost

Commonly known as Frost magic, but little known as Transient Death magic. Those who meet users of this magic normally fail to pass on their knowledge of it to others. What is left behind is an icy trail already melting away that will soon evaporate into thin air. Human wizards and other lowly, underdeveloped beings control ice magic in the most predictable of ways, slowing down enemies and freezing them in their tracks. Such icicle magic would be considered one of the most dangerous elemental magic.

In the hands of an undead human, a Dread Knight, Frost magic is beyond what normal beings would imagine it to be. The only ones who lived to tell the tales were probably the Death Cult wizards who taught them how to manipulate the magic and control them to their will. The Dread Knight, previously a Witcher, not only manipulated the magic, but advanced it to levels beyond a common wizard’s.

Controlling every particle of water anywhere within the magical range of this Dread Knight, the Frigid Lord, ice can be formed from anywhere that has water and steam can be solidified within a heartbeat. 70% of an average human body is made up of water. When a body’s temperature reaches below 20 degrees Celsius, the person may faint and die from freezing. A Frigid Lord is able to instantly reduce a body’s temperature to zero, causing instead death. As water freezes, it expands, and when the water within a body freezes, it expands from the inside, bursting every bit of flesh in contact. This is a scenario where the Frigid Lord is merciful, killing the target outright and leaving only a bloody pulp of internally shredded flesh. A cruel user of Frost magic could freeze parts of the target’s body first, leaving the heart for last and leaving the target to die ever so slowly.

Blood

Life is dependent on the blood in a body. Some may say that blood is life itself. Dread Knights who are able to control and make use of the blood is said to wield the most terrifying magic in the world, second only to the gods. Devouring flesh and bone and drinking the blood that drains from the bodies of their victims, the Dread Knight, a Dreadnaught, absorbs the life force and powers of those he consumes. The blood that runs in their veins are mixed with the blood that is drunk and with the abundance of life coursing through a Dreadnaught’s body, their eyes resonate with the power of life itself, glowing redder and redder.

These are the class of Dread Knights that can wield any power in the world, taking on the skills and abilities of those whose bodies they have consumed. A human is strong in fighting spirit and tenacity; a Night Fall features omniscience; a Black Sun holds strength beyond beasts. In the hands of a Dreadnaught, the best of every race known to earth are combined into the one true wielder of power, and glow that fills the eyes of such a Dreadnaught could blind any who would dare to stare directly into them.

It is said that even angels, demons and the gods would meet their match against the Dreadnaught. These celestial beings hold immense power since they are not bounded by the restrictions on earth and are not limited to what puny flesh and ones can withstand. A Dreadnaught absorbing the life force of such a being could only be imaginary, for they would wield the great forbidden powers and enhance them with the best elements they had absorbed thus far. The eyes of one who have consumed a celestial being can be controlled and manipulated to hide the glow within their eyes and not reveal their true strength. One unfortunate victim had the audacity to challenge such a Dreadnaught, and that day, the glow of the eyes were so bright, all who were within the vicinity swore the red eyes were attempting to blot out the sun.

A secret is kept amongst the Blood magic wielders, one that is a double-edged sword to them and is not known even other the other Dread Knights. With life comes memories, and with memories comes emotions. By consuming the life of others, the Dreadnaughts also consume the emotions held within. Love is said to run in their veins. In a secret location forged and created by the magic of the Dreadnaughts, they are able to hold the Baptism of Blood with their true love. Bringing their loved ones to the pedestal, regardless by force or of their own volition, they would perform the Ritual that is centered on their lovers.

A Dreadnaught would reach into his own heart and focus all the powerful emotions he holds within, and then transfer it all into the heart and soul of his lover by way of blood transfusion. A human body can only hold so much life and emotions, and suddenly being infused with a Dread Knight’s blood is too much to bear. As his lover struggles against the bonds – more mental than physical – that hold her onto the pedestal, the Dreadnaught forms a blood sarcophagus, effectively retaining her body and soul in halted time. With his only senses of humanity sealed within his lover, his mind roams the world of magic free and unbound. It is said that a Dreadnaught who has undergone the Baptism of Blood is able to challenge the rights of the High God, Ragnar.

However, unlike the High God, these Dreadnaughts have a weakness and is thus kept secret on pain of death. Should the Dreadnaught ever fall in love again, betraying the love he once held for his first true love, the seal upon the blood sarcophagus will shatter. It will release all of his sealed emotions and with it, all of his great magic are forced into a compression, like a great funeral pyre within a tiny forge, and burst out, completely destroying the body of the Dreadnaught.

Shadow Fire

Blacksmiths have been building great fires in their forges, strong and fierce enough to turn metal red hot and into liquid. During the cold winters when kinder wood were difficult to obtain but fires still need to be created, wizards get tasked the menial job of starting a fire with their magic. It was a demeaning task, but it was fitting for lowly humans.

The fires wielded by the Dread Knights would never be used for merely starting a forge. If it ever was used as an ignition, it was to let the flames go out of control and consume the entire village. The villagers would gather all the buckets they have and fill them up with snow and toss them in a thick blanket over the burning source of the flame. The snow soon melts as soon as the snow makes contact with the fiery blackness, making all efforts to kill the fire useless. When funeral pyres burn out, they leave behind ash, soot and a charred ground. When the shadow fires of a Dread Knight raze a village, charred grounds are the only remainders and the lingering heat wave stays for many months. Volcanic ashes leave behind soil fertile for growth; shadow fires leave behind sand suitable for death.

Such is the power of Shadow Fire wielded by the Ironclad class of Dread Knights. The flame they control burns as do normal flames do, but they persist as the darkness persists in draining the light of whatever it touches. The flames absorb the life of any being it touches and burns it; they consume the elements within objects and reduce it to nothing. Should there be a fire that cannot seem to die, or flames that devour a village too quickly, take heed and flee as fast as you can, for the fire completely burns one small part of the body at a time, killing off a person’s outer body first before reaching the vital organs inside.
